A dental bridge literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth are missing. It consists of false teeth (pontics) anchored to the natural teeth on either side. Unlike dental implants, bridges require no surgery — but they do require preparing the adjacent teeth.
The most common type. Crowns are placed on the teeth either side of the gap, with a false tooth suspended between them. Requires filing down the adjacent teeth to fit the crowns.
A false tooth with metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back of adjacent teeth. Less invasive — no crowns needed. Best for front teeth where biting forces are lower.
Anchored to only one adjacent tooth instead of two. Used when there is only one natural tooth next to the gap.
| Type | NHS cost | Private cost |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional bridge | Band 3: 319.10 pounds | 500-1,500 pounds |
| Maryland bridge | Band 3: 319.10 pounds | 400-1,000 pounds |
| Cantilever bridge | Band 3: 319.10 pounds | 400-1,200 pounds |
For a detailed comparison: Single tooth implant vs bridge. The short version: implants preserve bone and do not affect adjacent teeth but cost more and require surgery. Bridges are faster, cheaper (especially on the NHS), and do not require surgery.
