How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

Most root canals take 1-2 appointments of 60-90 minutes each

The length depends on which tooth is being treated. Front teeth (incisors) have one root canal and can often be completed in a single appointment. Back teeth (molars) have 3-4 canals and may need two visits.

What happens during root canal treatment

  1. Anaesthesia (5 minutes): Local anaesthetic numbs the area completely. You will feel pressure but no pain.
  2. Access (5-10 minutes): Your dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp.
  3. Cleaning (30-45 minutes): The infected nerve tissue and bacteria are removed from the canals using fine instruments. The canals are shaped and flushed with antibacterial solution.
  4. Filling (10-15 minutes): The cleaned canals are filled with a rubber-like material (gutta percha) and sealed.
  5. Restoration: A filling or crown is placed to protect the tooth. Crowns are recommended for back teeth which bear heavy biting forces.

Does it hurt?

Modern root canal treatment is performed under effective local anaesthesia. Most patients say it feels no different from having a filling. The reputation for pain comes from outdated techniques — and from the infection that precedes it (the toothache that brings you in is usually far worse than the treatment itself).

Cost

On the NHS, root canal falls under Band 2 at 73.50 pounds. Privately, costs range from 350-700 pounds depending on the tooth. If a crown is needed afterwards, this is Band 3 (319.10 pounds on NHS).
