How to Stop Grinding Your Teeth at Night

You might grind your teeth and not know it

Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching) affects an estimated 8-10% of adults, according to the NHS. Most grinding happens during sleep, so many people are unaware until a dentist spots the damage or a partner hears it.

Signs you might be grinding

  • Worn, flattened, or chipped teeth
  • Jaw pain or stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Headaches, particularly around the temples
  • Earache (referred pain from the jaw joint)
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Indentations on the sides of your tongue
  • Your partner hears grinding sounds at night

What causes bruxism?

  • Stress and anxiety โ€” the most common trigger. Stress-related grinding often starts during difficult life periods.
  • Sleep disorders โ€” bruxism is associated with sleep apnoea and disrupted sleep patterns.
  • Medications โ€” SSRIs (antidepressants) are a known cause. If you suspect medication-related grinding, speak to your GP.
  • Alcohol and caffeine โ€” both increase grinding frequency.
  • Bite problems โ€” misaligned teeth or an uneven bite can contribute.

Treatment

Night guard (occlusal splint)

A custom-made acrylic guard worn over your teeth during sleep. It does not stop you grinding but protects your teeth from damage. Custom guards from your dentist are far more effective and comfortable than shop-bought ones. At Parish Dental, custom night guards are available privately.

Stress management

If stress is the trigger: exercise, meditation, reducing caffeine and alcohol, and addressing the source of stress can all help. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) has evidence for reducing bruxism.

Repairing the damage

If grinding has already damaged your teeth, composite bonding can rebuild worn edges. Severely worn teeth may need crowns. Cracked teeth may need root canal treatment or extraction.

If you suspect you grind your teeth, book a check-up โ€” your dentist can spot the signs and recommend the right approach. Call 0113 263 8509.
