Toothache Home Remedies: What Works and What Does Not

Home remedies manage pain temporarily โ€” they do not fix the cause

A toothache always has an underlying cause (decay, infection, crack) that needs professional treatment. Home remedies buy you time until you can see a dentist โ€” they are not a substitute.

What works

  1. Ibuprofen (400mg): The best OTC option โ€” reduces both pain and inflammation. Take with food.
  2. Paracetamol (500mg-1g): Alternative if you cannot take ibuprofen. Less anti-inflammatory effect.
  3. Alternating both: Take ibuprofen, then paracetamol 2 hours later, then ibuprofen 2 hours after that. Continuous coverage.
  4. Cold compress: Frozen peas in a cloth against your cheek. 20 minutes on, 20 off. Numbs and reduces swelling.
  5. Salt water rinse: Teaspoon of salt in warm water. Rinse gently. Reduces bacteria.
  6. Clove oil: Contains eugenol โ€” a natural anaesthetic. Dab on cotton wool and apply to the painful area. Available from pharmacies.
  7. Elevate your head: Sleep propped up. Reduces blood pressure to the area.

What does NOT work

  • Aspirin on the gum: Causes chemical burns. Take it orally, not topically.
  • Whisky/alcohol on the gum: Irritates tissue. Does not provide meaningful pain relief.
  • Garlic: No evidence for dental pain. Can irritate gums.
  • Ignoring it: Dental pain does not resolve on its own. The cause needs treating.

For severe or worsening pain: Toothache at night guide. For emergencies: Parish Dental same-day appointments. Call 0113 263 8509.
