Dental Crown vs Filling: When Do You Need a Crown?

Dental Crown vs Filling: When Do You Need a Crown?

A filling repairs a small amount of damage. A crown replaces the entire outer surface.

Both fillings and crowns restore damaged teeth — but they are designed for different levels of damage. Understanding the difference helps you make an informed decision.

When a filling is enough

  • Small to moderate cavities (less than half the tooth width)
  • Minor chips that do not affect tooth structure
  • The remaining tooth structure is strong enough to support a filling

Fillings are quicker (20-30 minutes), cheaper (NHS Band 2: 73.50 pounds), and preserve more natural tooth. Read: NHS charges explained.

When you need a crown

  • Large cavities where more than half the tooth is damaged
  • After root canal treatment (the tooth becomes brittle)
  • Cracked or fractured teeth that a filling cannot hold together
  • Severely worn teeth (from grinding or erosion)
  • Teeth with multiple large existing fillings that keep failing

A crown covers the entire visible tooth above the gum line, providing strength and protection. It takes 2 appointments and costs NHS Band 3: 319.10 pounds. Private crowns cost 400-1,000 pounds depending on material.
